Resident Information: 96 Gallon Trash Service

Posted 5:51 PM by

Many residents in Meridian-Kessler have recently received notice that Republic Services is switching to automatic pickup routes, requiring the use of 96-gallon containers.  The automatic pickup and containers are similar to the way Republic has been collecting recycling in the area for the past few years.  After hearing from several confused residents and speaking with the City, we have compiled a summary of the changes below:

  • This is a pilot program impacting solid waste district #3, which roughly impacts M-K residents north of 46th Street and East of College Ave.

  • It is expected that all of the Republic Services collection areas will be switched to the automated pickup in the future, though an exact timeline has not been established.

  • Each household in the affected area will receive one 96-gallon container at no charge.

  • Timeline:
    • October 1th- begin delivery of 96-gallon carts to residents (3-4 week process)
    • October 1th - Grace period begins- residents are asked to use their new cart once they receive it.  Those not following the guidelines will receive a notice, but trash will be collected.
    • November 30th- only trash in the 96-gallon carts will be taken.

Questions:

  • What about heavy trash that does not fit in my cart?
    • Each household may place up to two heavy trash items out each month on heavy trash day.  Heavy trash day will occur on your regular pickup day during the last full week of the month.
  • What if I already have a 96 gallon or similar cart :
    • If the cart is of a similar style to the Republic carts, such that the equipment can handle it, you will likely be able to use it for trash pickup.
    • MKNA believes that smaller two-wheeled containers will be acceptable, though are still trying to confirm.
  • Why is Republic Services moving to automated trash pick-up?
    • Automated trash collection with carts reduces illegal dumping, makes disposing of trash safer and easier, is more efficient, and provides a uniform look to the city’s streets and alleys.
  • Can residents purchase additional carts?
    • Yes, residents can purchase additional carts for $65. These additional carts will be the property of the resident.
    • Republic Services will be responsible for replacement carts and repairs. Residents should contact Republic (317-917-7300) to report needed repairs.
  • What if my cart is stolen?
    • First call the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's non-emergency number at (317) 327-3811 to make a police report. Once you have this report number, give it to the Mayor's Action Center at 327-4MAC (4622) and ask for a replacement. When the police report is confirmed, a replacement cart will be delivered to your home.
  • What if I am not able to transport the 96-gal container to the curb?
    • Smaller carts are available for people who need them.
    • Personal assistance is also available for those who are unable to transport the container to the curb.
    • Both services can be arranged by contacting the Mayor’s Action Center at 327-4622.
    • MKNA’s office can also assist those in need by contacting us here.
